Justin Zeitner tops Malvern Bank Late Models at Lakeside Speedway

By Anthony Ainslie (Kansas City, KS) -- Another victory went to Justin Zeitner as he dominated Friday’s Malvern Bank Super Late Models West Series race at the Lakeside Speedway.

The high-banked 4/10 mile played host to the West Series for the third and final time of the 2023 season. The night was the 20th round of the year for the West Series with about one month of competition left before the series champion is crowned.

Points Leader Tad Pospisil kicked off the night setting the fastest time in qualifying. The Norfolk, Nebraska driver clocked in at 17.111 seconds to top the time charts. The night’s three heat races were won by Derrick Stewart, Corey Zeitner and Bill Leighton Jr.

Kyle Berck and Justin Zeitner sat on the front row for the 25-lap main event. The race got off to a rocky start as the front row did not take off which set off a pileup in the back of the field. A couple of cars went to the hot pit for repairs, but everyone was able to regroup and take the restart.

The botched initial start would end up being the only incident of the race as the 25-laps went by in a hurry. Berck led the opening five laps before Justin Zeitner found what he needed on the outside line. He drove around Berck for the lead coming out of turn four, and from there, he would run away with the show.

In the closing laps, Berck would be involved in an intense battle for second as Bill Leighton Jr. made the late-race charge to the front while Tad Pospisil continued to pressure them for position.

When it was all said and done, Justin Zeitner stood tall in victory lane for the eighth time for the 2023 season. It was Zeitner’s second win at Lakeside Speedway after he won the very first series race at the track back in October, 2014. Bill Leighton Jr. made the charge on the final lap to take second while Kyle Berck took third. Tad Pospisil was fourth, and Charlie McKenna rounded out the top five.

Only four races remain on the calendar for the Malvern Bank West Series in 2023. On September 10th, the tour heads back to Nebraska to take on the Eagle Raceway for the inaugural Stewart Alley Memorial. After that, the series will make its debut at Spencer, Iowa’s Clay County Speedway on September 12th.
