Champs crowned as Marrant, Anderson, Nieman, Brown go out on a high note

October 9, 2015  |  by Larry Lowery Jr.

The 2015 race season officially came to a close on Friday night. Kerry Davis took home the championship in the USRA Modified division, Ed Noll capped off a great season in the USRA B Mods for the championship, in the USRA Stock Car division it was Brett Heeter celebrating his 4th Lakeside Speedway title and Tim Shields dominated on his way to the championship in the Grand Nationals.

Before the titles were handed out, another night of racing had to be completed.

Heading into the night the USRA Stock Car division had seen 2 drivers have great seasons, Kevin Anderson and Brett Heeter. Both drivers had won 9 features before the finale. Would one driver break the tie or would a new face go to victory lane?

Gary Donaldson and Anderson would get this one under way. It would be Anderson taking the early advantage on the night.

In the end it would be a 3 car battle coming down the stretch to the finish. Unfortunately, the battle was for 2nd. Anderson had locked up the top spot and would run away with the win.

The win was the 10th for Anderson on the season. It’s a small conciliation prize after not winning the championship, having the most wins on a single season is a good stat too.

Donaldson would have some more success and finish with the runner-up spot, the points champ, Heeter, would finish 3rd, 4th went to Nate Barnes and Kevin McGinnis would bring home the 5th position.

USRA Stock Car Heat Race Winners were Donaldson and Anderson.

Luke Nieman came into the night with a slim shot at the USRA B Mod Championship. To win the championship he would have to have some help. Ed Noll held a 42 point lead going into the night.

Nieman got off on the right foot at the beginning of the feature. He would take out to the lead at the beginning of the feature. The only thing that Nieman had in his control is where he would finish at. He couldn’t do anything about Ed Noll’s finishing position.

The night went exactly how it was suppose to go for Nieman on the track. He would wire the field and win his 2nd feature of the season, but Nieman couldn’t control Noll’s finish. A 9th place finish would give Noll the championship, but not before Nieman made it close (16 points) at the finish.

Shad Turner raced his way to 2nd, after winning a week ago Doug Keller finished 3rd, Chad Clancy would bring home 4th and Nick Newton stormed his way from 10th to finish 5th.

USRA B Mod Heat Race Winners were Nieman, Turner, Clancy and Patrick Royalty. The B Feature was won by Blake Pierce.

For the past two weeks Aaron Marrant has been on fire! He won the ULMA Late Model Feature 2 weeks ago, last week he won the USRA Modified Feature going away and people wanted to know what he was going to do this week for an encore?

How about going out and winning his 2nd USRA Modified Feature in a row and his 3rd of the season? That’s exactly what Marrant did.

From the drop of the green flag Marrant jumped on the competition and showed them no mercy, again, for the 2nd straight week. Marrant has come into his own in the final 3 weeks of the season and he is hoping that carries over next week to the USRA Fall Nationals.

Making the haul all the way from IA, Ryan Ruter finished 2nd, Darron Fuqua started on the pole and finished 3rd, 4th went to Terry Schultz and the points leader, Kerry Davis, rounded out the top 5.

USRA Modified Heat Race Winners were Marrant and Davis.

In the Grand Nationals all the talk all season long centered around Tim Shields. Shield’s dominating performance overshadowed some strong efforts from other drivers.

Donnie Brown is a driver that has turned in a solid effort in the last month of the season. This season Brown should be named the most improved driver. Week after week he has gotten better, he grabbed his 1st win a few weeks back in dominating fashion and Friday night at Lakeside he did it again.

Starting from the pole position Brown dropped the boom on the competition. He sprinted out to the lead and never looked back on the way to his 2nd win of the season. With the win Brown joins Shields and Nick Newton as the only other drivers to win more than 1 feature on the season.

Don Marrs pressured Brown a little but would have to settle for the 2nd spot, 3rd went to Nick Newton, Dave Powell raced his way to a 4th place finish and Nick Drew garnered the 5th spot.
