Last Week’s Recap…
Last week’s races saw a couple of first time winners at Lakeside Speedway. Luke Nieman did everything right as he rolled to his 1st win in the USRA B Mod Feature. The Grand Nationals saw Tim Shields stay out of victory lane for just the 2nd time all season as Don Marrs got the win in the Grand Nationals. Kevin Anderson returned to his winning ways in the USRA Stock Car ranks and it was Kerry Davis blasting his way to win #5 on the season.

Setting Up This Week’s Races…

USRA Modifieds…

Kerry Davis is having a magical 2015 season. Last week was win #5 and it was an impressive win as he led from start to finish. Davis has been on his ‘A’ game all season long and the competition should be nervous. In a post race interview last week Davis said that he gave 3 races away this year, so that means he could have had win #8 last week if not for handing those wins away. The veteran racer is enjoying the type of success that he used to have earlier in his career.

Another driver that has having a resurgence this season is Tim Karrick. Karrick the former champ has pulled in to victory lane at Lakeside Speedway and Central Missouri Speedway and put those runs together with some other great finishes it puts Karrick in the 5th spot in National USRA Modified Points.

Speaking of Karrick. Did anyone see the race between him and Aaron Marrant last week in the feature? It was a good battle all the way to the end where Karrick ended up 4th and Marrant 5th.

Nic Bidinger’s quest for a 3 peat could be in jeopardy. Davis maintains a 62 point advantage over Karrick and a 111 point margin over Bidinger. There is some time left but Bidinger will need to log some wins and he will need some help from the racing Gods.

A total of 16 USRA Mods checked in last week to battle it out.

Over the course of this season the Modified division has produced 8 different winners.

Aaron Marrant #70, Orrick, MO.

This season has been a slow one for Aaron Marrant. A blown engine at the beginning of the season kept him out of competition for a little while and since returning, Marrant hasn’t found the success that he has grown accustomed to. Last week might be the thing that puts Marrant on the right path. He started 13th and drove all the way up to 5th and was close to pulling out 4th. This strong finish might be the shot in the arm that gives Marrant some confidence. Keep an eye on the #70 this weekend and see if he doesn’t pull one out!

USRA Stock Cars…

Last week we saw the return of the Kevin Anderson that dominated the early portion of the race season. Anderson looked strong out in front of the competition last Friday night as he pulled off win #5.

A huge melee on the opening lap last week saw Jeff Elder take a wild ride coming out of turn 4. The accident collected a lot of cars. Hopefully, Elder will be able to put his ride back together or get a new one. He was having a nice season up to last week’s event.

Double duty! One of the Lakeside Stock Car drivers, John O’Neal Jr., is getting a chance to run a Late Model at a different track on Saturday nights the past few weeks. Last week he drove to victory lane in the late model. Will that win give him a boost of confidence and propel him to a win at Lakeside Speedway this week?

In the USRA National Stock Car Points Brett Heeter is sitting in the 11th position. Heeter is also the points leader at Lakeside Speedway and has been at the top of the standings for most of the season. Heeter is on a quest for his 3rd title.

The Hard Charger from last week had to be Jason Ryun. Ryun went from 16th to 5th in the A Main as he put on a whale of a run.

Nate Barnes #29, Kearney, MO.

In 2015 Nate Barnes debuted a new car. It took him a few weeks to get a handle on this new ride, but he has a good grip on it now. Unfortunately, it hasn’t landed him in victory lane yet. A place where Barnes has visited a time or two over his career. Barnes is a competitor and he is not going to be happy running in the top 10 or top 5! He wants a win and he can taste it. Last week’s 3rd place finish was another one of those good finishes, but it wasn’t a win. Six different winners have rolled into victory lane this season and Barnes wants to be #7. Look to see if Barnes can make this all happen Friday night.

USRA B Mods…

If their was a most popular driver award that was voted on by the drivers of Lakeside Speedway, Luke Nieman just might be that guy. Nieman is one to never really argue, voice a loud opinion and he is always there to lend a hand or part to a fellow racer. It was nice to see Nieman come out on top last week with his 1st win at Lakeside Speedway in the USRA B Mods. It showed the nice guys do finish 1st, sometime.

With the win last week Nieman became the 7th different winner on the season at Lakeside in the B Mods. Is it possible that this division will reach double digit winners by the end of this season? I would say that it would be a safe bet.

Ed Noll continues to hold down the top spot in the point standings. This class has the tightest points race so far as Noll is only 26 points ahead of Luke Nieman.

Andy Bryant, who finished 2nd in the feature last week, is currently leading the USRA B Mod National Points. Other Lakeside racers, Brad Smith and Shadren Turner, are both 4th and 9th in National Points respectively.

Last year’s USRA National Champ, Chad Clancy, had a good run last week as he finished 3rd after starting in the 12th spot. Don Marrs parlayed his win in the Grand National A Main into a 10th place finish in the B Mod Main. Not a bad run considering he started 19th.

Andy Bryant #28, Fort Scott, KS.

Andy Bryant is an on again off again racer at Lakeside Speedway. He races there on a need to basis. This season he hasn’t competed in every race, but he has gained a victory earlier in the year. As the season works it’s way down the stretch, you might see Bryant at Lakeside more often. He is in the quest for the National Championship. He will need wins and points. What a better track than Lakeside Speedway, which produces a full field of cars every week and it also contains other drivers competing for that title. Bryant is a mover and a shaker, look for him to rise to the occasion this week as he just might end up in victory lane.

Grand Nationals…

Don Marrs, yes the same Don Marrs that owns the track, became only the 3rd different winner on the 2015 season in the Grand National division. Marrs who not only worries about the track, but his race program (which also includes a USRA B Mod) put everything together last week as he sped away with an impressive win. Marrs had a challenge from Nick Newton early, but ran away from the field on the way to his 1st win.

Nick Newton logged another runner-up finish. It’s safe to say that if Newton doesn’t win he ends up in 2nd.

The man of the year, Tim Shields, suffered problems last week and it relegated him to an uncharacteristic 6th place finish. As Shields has built up a 174 point lead in the standings, he can afford a few of those uncharacteristic nights.

Tim Shields #42T, Kansas City, MO.

Tim Shields is our pick as the driver to watch this week for numerous reasons. First every time Shields has not won this season, he has come back to win the next week. Second, Shields has won 9 times already this season. Lastly, Shields odds of staying out of victory lane are slim at best. Shields is a racer and racers want to win each and every night out. It’s a tough feat that most drivers can obtain but this has been one of those magical seasons for Shields. There has been only 11 Grand National Features this season and Shields has won 9 of 11. That means that Shields wins 82% of the time. Lets see if he doesn’t make good on the numbers this week.
