Last week rain got the best of Lakeside Speedway again, but they will try to get it going again Friday, July 17, 2015.

Here are the story lines to be watching this week...

The season has progressed rather nicely at Lakeside Speedway. Twelve races are left on the schedule before Championship Night so that means that some drivers need to make some moves starting tonight to get up front in the points standings or the drivers that are at the top will need to defend what they have built up so far. No matter which side of the fence you are on, the fans will get to see more great racing action which they have come to enjoy.

Last Week’s Recap…
Fireworks and awesome racing action were enjoyed by all last Friday night at Lakeside Speedway. Kerry Davis continued his domination in the USRA Modified division with win #4 on the season. In the USRA Stock Cars Brett Heeter also took home win #4 on the year. The driver that won on opening night in the USRA B Mod class, Ed Noll, raced his way to win #3 on the season. The Grand Nationals returned to form last week as Tim Shields rolled to win #9.

Setting Up This Week’s Races…

USRA Modifieds…

The Magic continues for Kerry Davis and his team this year. Last week was win #4 and it was a good one as he had to fight off Nic Bidinger for the win. Davis has found his groove at Lakeside in 2015 and it’s going to be hard to knock him out of his top spot in the points.

The hard luck award from last week would have to go to Nic Bidinger. Bidinger was looking at a top 2 finish, but coming to the checkers he got in a little to low on the track and clipped an infield tire that sent him around. As Bidinger is chasing his 3rd straight points title it wasn’t the finish he was wanting. Mark my words he will be coming back this week looking to make good on last week’s missed opportunity.

Congrats to Jared Steins on a good run last week. Steins had his best finish of the season coming in 3rd last week.

The points battle is not as tight as it was at the start of the season (LOL), but Tim Karrick is making a go of it. Currently Karrick is 49 points behind Davis is the battle for the championship.

A pair of top 5 finishers from a week ago, Mark Schafman and Lance Town, were the hard chargers of the night. Schafman started 10th and finished 4th while Town started 11th and finished 5th.

Mark Schafman #34 Edwardsville, MO.

Mark Schafman is a an old school type racers from Edwardsville, KS. He has produced some memorable runs over the years and he has done it on a limited budget. This year it seems like Schafman is quietly getting things done this season. Each week he produces a good finish but it hasn’t been what he is looking for though. Schafman would like to stand in victory lane a little more often. Last week he had a good run and it might have been better if he started closer to the front. Watch Schafman this week and don’t be surprised if he is in contention for the win. He is capable of getting the job done and it’s about time for him to make a move in the points standings.

USRA Stock Cars…

In 2015 Brett Heeter is doing everything right. He took home win #4 last week and it was his 2nd straight victory. Heeter is making it look easy each and every week out on the track. Will it continue again this week?

#4 is a magic number for a couple of drivers in this division. This is the number of total wins on the season for both Brett Heeter and Kevin Anderson. Most drivers aspire to win 1 race, let alone 4 in one season and there is still plenty of races left on year.

Heeter is trying to haul in his 3rd straight points championship at Lakeside and his odds are looking good to this point. Just a few weeks ago the point margin from 1st to 2nd was less than 10 points and now that margin has widened up to 41 points. The thoughts of a 3 peat can now start creeping into Heeter’s thoughts!

Jim Powell Jr. had to start deep in the field again last week, yet again. He would end up 3rd on the night. If Powell is going to close the gap in the points he needs to start finishing in front of Heeter on a weekly basis.

Another hard charger from last week who put on a great run was Christopher Smith. Smith went from 17th to 10th in the main event.

If there is another driver at Lakeside that is on fire lately it could be Jeff Elder. Over the past few weeks Elder has had some great runs. It looks like only a matter of time before he knocks down the door to victory lane. Elder is one of those drivers that has become a front runner on a weekly basis and he has done it quietly. Most fans have had names like Heeter, Seifert, Barnes, etc. on their minds but this year you have to throw Elder’s name into the mix. His effort last week warrants watching him this week to see if he can’t improve on the runner up finish! If he does you know where that puts him.

USRA B Mods…

Win #3, the hat trick, came to Ed Noll a week ago. Noll has jumped to the front of the B Mod standings and his season performance has got everyone wondering where this effort is coming from. With no disrespect, Noll had some good runs in years past but he never stood out like he is this season. What has made him go from the middle of the pack to a front runner? Noll has talent so it shouldn’t be a surprise how good he is doing this year. It’s taken him a little time since getting back into racing but he has figured it out, with the help of Prime Racing, and it’s provided Noll with a dream season to this point.

Last week’s feature saw a lot of action from top to bottom on the speedway. Everywhere you looked during the feature there seemed to be a tight battle for position and the fans loved every minute of it.

Luke Nieman was close to getting a win last week. He finished 2nd to Noll. Nieman is still one of many drivers would would like to become the 7th different B Mod driver to get into victory lane with the B Mods this season.

25 Cars started the feature last week. This number proves that the B Mod division is the most popular division when it comes to the number of competitors. It’s also a nice move by Lakeside officials for allowing all 25 to start the A Main.

Brad Smith #99, Belton, MO.

What has happened to Brad Smith? He took off on a whirlwind a little while back and came out with 3 wins, since his last win Smith has been quite. When will he regain the stride that took him to those 3 wins? For those of you that think there is something wrong in Smith’s program. Earlier in this article we talked about the number of racers in this class. There are a lot of them and when you throw in the caliber of competitors that are in the class you will know why Smith doesn’t win every single week. It’s a tough division! My thoughts are that Smith does want to win every race and he is working on finding the winning combo again. Keep an eye out and see if it isn’t this weekend that Smith figures it back out again.

Grand Nationals…

Tim Shields got back to the front of the Grand National field again last week. Although it was not as easy as it has been in the past. Nick Newton has figured something out in his ride and he pushed Shields to the limit last week before settling for 2nd. Hopefully the battle between these two takes off again.

Nick Newton #711, Kansas City, KS.

If Superman (Tim Shields) has any kryptonite it might be Nick Newton. Newton is the only other Grand National driver to keep Shields out of victory lane in 2015. Newton who cut his teeth in the Grand National division is back driving for Bill Rusinger this year and he has done a good job. Some mechanical issues have made his run to the front a little slower, but he has them figured out and now he is ready to push Shields each and every week. We will see if he can keep it up this week as he looks for his 2nd win of the season.
