Lakeside Speedway played host to the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars on Wednesday night and this Friday they are planning another big event. The USRA Weekly Racing Series will be in action Friday night and there will be an added ingredient put into the recipe; FIREWORKS. To kick off the big 4th of July holiday weekend, Lakeside will host great racing and fireworks to kickoff the weekend.
Friday night, July 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. the green flag will fly and the USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B Mods and Grand Nationals will once again display some of the best dirt track racing to be seen on the planet.

Last Week’s Recap…
Last Friday night warm temperatures hosted hot racing on the track. Tim Karrick put a late race move on Kerry Davis to win his 2nd USRA Modified Feature of the season. The USRA Stock Car main event was dominated by the points leader, Brett Heeter. Young USRA B Mod driver, Shad Turner, finally put a winning run together gaining his first win of the season. The big news of last week came in the Grand National Feature where it was a new face in victory lane for the first time, Nick Newton.

Setting Up This Week’s Races…

USRA Modifieds…
Tim Karrick is catching the swagger that he once held in the pit area on a weekly basis. The Basehor, KS driver is coming off a win a week ago and that makes it #2 on the season. Karrick has won several races and championships over the years, but recently his success rate has tailed off. That was until 2015, Karrick is feeling a rebirth of sorts. Well it keep up?

Kerry Davis finished 2nd last week after leading for a majority of the race. Nobody besides Davis knows that he let one slip through the cracks. It wasn’t a huge let down as Davis still maintains the points lead over Karrick and Nic Bidinger.

Last week saw just 14 USRA Modifieds in attendance. This week with the holiday weekend upon us look for more cars to check in and battle it out.

Karrick, Lewis Jackson and Darron Fuqua currently rank inside the top 10 in points Nationally for USRA Modifieds.

As Karrick doubled up last week it still left Lakeside Speedway with only 8 different winners this season.

Nic Bidinger #3B Perry, KS.

Nic has had a hit and miss season up to this point. Bidinger has a win, but he has struggled at times with mechanical issues etc. He has had to borrow a ride to make an A Main and he has had to sit one out. He needs to log some victories and he needs to get some consistent finishes to help him gain that 3rd consecutive USRA Mod Track Championship. Nobody has ever won three titles in a row at Lakeside in the Modified division. Currently, Bidinger sits 74 points back of Kerry Davis. A bit of a hurdle, but if anyone is capable of getting it done it would be Bidinger. Watch him this week and see if he cuts into that lead.

USRA Stock Cars…

The USRA Stock Car division provided another strong dose of great racing last Friday night. Brett Heeter blasted to his 3rd feature win of the season. Each and every time Heeter gets out front he is tough to beat. This fact was evident last Friday night.

Jeff Elder put on a show in the main event last week. Elder started 20th on the night but by the end of the feature he scored a 7th place finish.

Elder wasn’t the only driver to put on a hard charge last week. Blake Peeler also put together a decent run gaining 8 spots, finishing 10th after starting 18th.

Heeter opened up a 32 point advantage in the point standings. Jim Powell Jr. is still 2nd with Bobby Tavis III in 3rd.

Four of the top 20 drivers in National USRA Stock Car points race at Lakeside Speedway. Thomas Roberts currently leads the national standings.

Bobby Tavis III #OT, Leavenworth, KS.

Bobby Tavis has come a long way in his racing career. It seems like just a few years ago he was known as a driver for flipping out of turn #3 during a feature, but now he is known as a veteran and one of the toughest competitors at Lakeside. Tavis has put together several wins over the years and his program has gotten better and better. This year Tavis has not gotten into victory lane, but it’s only a matter of time before he knocks down the door. Six different drivers have made it to victory lane. This weekend will Tavis make #7?

USRA B-Mods…

It’s been a busy week for the USRA B Mods. Last Friday Shad Turner knocked off his 1st win and then Wednesday night Randal Schiffelbein Jr. won his 2nd feature of the year. Friday night will be the 3rd USRA B Mod feature in 7 days. I think the drivers in this division will be ready to go.

After Wednesday night’s feature the points were jumbled up once again. Ed Noll is sitting in the top spot, but now he has Luke Nieman and Shad Turner sitting 2nd and 3rd. It’s been a revolving door at the front of the points and it should continue.

Shad Turner was on top of the points standings earlier in the year, then he dropped down some and now he is battling back with a win last week followed by a runner-up finish Wednesday night. It shows that the youngster has some talent and will be a force to wreck-en with for years to come.

Wednesday night’s winner, Schiffelbein, is starting to come into this own. It’s taken him a little while to get a hang of the B Mods but he is now a contender everywhere he goes.

Part time racer, Mike Higley put on a whale of a run Wednesday night. Higley had some problems early in the night and it put him deep to start the A (16th). By the time the laps ran out Higley finished with a top 5 in 4th. Not a bad run at all.

Brad Smith and Turner are both in the top 20 for USRA B Mod National Points.

With Turner getting the win last Friday the B Mods now have 6 different winners on the season.

Luke Nieman. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

Luke Nieman #181, Nortonville, KS.

Nieman has gotten better each and every week. This season he has spent a lot of time at the front of the field, but he just can’t get over the hump for the win. He is capable. Nieman has hauled in a win at other tracks, but Lakeside has his number right now. As Nieman and his crew keep learning the car and setting it up to Nieman’s driving style, it could produce a Lakeside win. Only time will tell. For right now Nieman is still pulling in some consistent finishes which are evident by him sitting 2nd in the points. Keep an eye out and see if he does even better this week.

Grand Nationals…

For the first time this season we can report that Tim Shields did not win the Grand National A Main last week. We wondered how long it would take and who it would be, we now know that it’s Nick Newton. Newton got out in front last week and held on for the win.

This week it will be exciting to see if someone else can step up and follow Newton’s lead.

How will Tim Shields follow up a week where he didn’t end up in victory lane? That will be the question on everyone’s mind. It could be possible that Shields will come out with all cylinders firing. Look for Shields to assert his dominance once again. The outcome might have been different last week if Shields hadn’t spun and got sent to the rear of the field. Watch this week and see if Shields can rebound or fall deeper in the hole.
