June 25, 2015

Hopefully everything is back to normal at Lakeside Speedway. Last Friday night it was a continuation of awesome racing action at the home of dirt track racing in Kansas City, Lakeside Speedway. Several strong performers continued their strong seasons and some drivers are starting to shine. This week it is guaranteed to continue. Fans will also get a bit of extra excitement this week.

Friday night, June 26th, at 7:30 p.m. the green flag will fly and the weekly racing will continue and fans will get a chance to see “Big” Ed Beckley will be performing at the Lakeside Speedway. Beckley will be attempting a ramp-to-ramp jump over 10 new Chevrolet trucks on his Harley-Davidson.

In addition to Beckley’s record-setting jump on Friday, June 26, Lakeside Speedway will also have prizes for fans as well. Some of the items to be thrown into the crowd include T-shirts, hats, tickets to future events, tickets to Kansas City T-Bones basebell games, gift cards and cash.

The USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B Mods and Grand Nationals will once again headline Friday night’s action.

Last Week’s Recap…

Kerry Davis rolled to his 3rd win of the season in the USRA Modified Feature. A new winner jumped in victory lane in the USRA Stock Car division, John O’Neal Jr. O’Neal held off the competition and went on to the big win. Chad Clancy continued to reclaim his championship form as he went for his 2nd straight win in the USRA B Mods. It’s getting to sound repetitive, but Tim Shields went on to his 8th consecutive win in the Grand National main event.

Setting Up This Week’s Races…

USRA Modifieds…

Kerry Davis got an early Father’s Day present for his crew chief, and father, Norm Davis. Yes it was Davis’ 3rd win of the season, but last week’s win was special. Norm has been at Kerry’s side for his entire racing career and to pick up a win on Father’s Day weekend was super special.

The early leader in the last week’s feature, Darron Fuqua, came up with a bit of mechanical failure as his hot rod fell off while looking for his 2nd win on the season.

Davis still remains at the top of the points standings. Tim Karrick, Nic Bidinger, Mark Schafman and Darron Fuqua round out the rest of the top 5 in the points.

Last week wasn’t a strong week for Fuqua. He came in 3rd in the points and left 5th. A blown power plant caused Fuqua to take the hit last week. Without a backup engine Fuqua had to sit and watch the main event.

USMTS regular, Zack VanderBeek, made a stop in at Lakeside Speedway and had a very good night. VanderBeek started 9th and drove all the way up to 2nd before time ran out.

With Davis winning last week it means that there still just 8 different Mod winners this season.

Larry ‘Bubba’ Harvey #3 Kansas City, KS.

Bubba has been a mainstay in the USRA Modified class at Lakeside Speedway. He hasn’t competed in every single event this year, but last week fans got a chance to see just how good Bubba is. As he continues to come out and race he will knock some of the rust off of his game and he will work his way up to the front of the pack. Victory lane has seen Bubba a time or two over the past and there shouldn’t be any question if Harvey can get back there again this season. Watch Harvey this week and see if he continues to improve. My thought says he will!

USRA Stock Cars…

The USRA Stock Car division has a lot of talented drivers. It took a little while for one driver, John O’Neal Jr., to get a win, but everyone knew it was coming. O’Neal has spent a lot of time building Stock Cars and helping others over the past off-season and it hindered his game. When you are John O’Neal Jr. and you have had the career he has had, it’s all just a matter of time. The question is will he join the repeat winners list this week?

Brett Heeter overtook Jim Powell Jr. for the lead in the point standings. Powell had a tough night. He started 17th in the feature after some problems in the heat race, but by the time the feature rolled out he was back on the move. By the end of the night he finished 10th, but it wasn’t enough to maintain the lead. As only 6 points separates these drivers it’s far from over.

Last week a total of 21 USRA Stock Car competitors stepped in to battle it out. It was only 3 shy of a full field. The competition level continues to grow week in and week out.

The Stock Car class now has 6 different winners after 10 races this season.

Steve Herrick #5K Topeka, KS.

Steve Herrick is in his first season of racing full time at Lakeside Speedway. He is learning like everyone else that has come before him that it’s not as easy as it looks. Herrick had to find a new weekly track after Heartland Park Topeka went belly up. After a couple of track championships he was wanting to continue to race on a weekly basis and Lakeside was his choice. This season has season mechanical problems and other issues have plagued Herrick. Most fans of Stock Car racing know Herrick’s resume and it shouldn’t be long before he adds his name to the 2015 winners’ list.

USRA B Mods…

Whoa, who woke up Chad Clancy? In the past 2 weeks Clancy has won back to back features, something that only Ed Noll and Brad Smith have accomplished this year. Not just that, Clancy has won his last 4 races if you add in his 2 wins at I-35 in the past 2 weeks as well. It shows that Clancy is on his game. The Prime Racing team has him firing on all cylinders and the competition better get ready to amp up this week.

In the early season points race it’s still Ed Noll hanging on to the top spot. Brad Smith is just 12 markers back, but this is still anyone’s race. Noll has been up and down this season and to win a title he will have to be consistent.

Logan Martin had one of the best performances of the season last Friday night. Martin started 25th in the feature and by the end of the night he was in the 7th position. That is a lot of cars to pass in one main event. Logan also pulled double duty last week racing in the USRA Mods too.

Track owner Don Marrs didn’t have to bad of a night either. Marrs finished 11th after starting 24th.

There have been 5 different winners so far this season in the USRA B Mod division, that number did not change with Clancy winning again for the 2nd straight week.

The B Mod class has been the most popular in 2015. To date a whopping total of 56 drivers have hit the track this season.

Brad Smith #99 Belton, MO.

It was just a month ago that we were ready to hand Brad Smith the keys to the castle and let him rule the land of B Mods! Yes, he broke in with 3 wins, he has battled all the way up to 2nd in the points (that’s with missing one week!) and he is always at the front of the pack. Unfortunately for Smith this is a tough class!!! There are so many capable drivers that no one driver is going to dominate. With that being said, nobody should dominate! Smith has been quiet the last few weeks, that is if you call running in the top 5 every night quiet. Watch and see if he doesn’t put some pressure on for a win this Friday night.

Grand Nationals…

The Tim Shields show continued for race number 8 for the Grand Nationals. It was another power play night for the driver that remains undefeated.

Steven Dibben finished 2nd last week in a mirror image of Nick Newton the week before. Dibben started 7th and made his way up to 2nd.

What is the answer to beating Tim Shields!

Grand National Driver To Watch This Week…

Steven Dibben #69 Smithville, MO.

Steven Dibben has been in the Grand National division for quite some time and if there is a driver that can knock off Tim Shields it should be Dibben. Last week might have been a shot in the arm finishing 2nd. This season has to be a downer for most of the class with the exception of Shields. Week after week the Grand National drivers have to do their homework and I believe that Dibben has done just that. Watch this week Dibben just might have what it takes!
