June 17, 2015

Everything went back to normal last Friday for Lakeside Speedway. The rains held off and great racing action once again dominated the night. Fans can look for more of the same this coming Friday night, June 19.

The green flag will fly at 7:30 and the weekly racing at the Home of Dirt Track Racing in Kansas City; Lakeside Speedway, for Marrs Tree Service Night.

The USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods and Grand Nationals will once again slug it out, looking to gain the upper hand in the run to a championship.

Last Week’s Recap…

Tim Karrick regained his form of old as he won his 1st USRA Modified feature of the 2015 season. In the Grand National main event it was Mr. Undefeated taking the top honors, once again. Another new face showed up in victory lane as Andy Bryant logged his 1st USRA B Mod Feature win at Lakeside Speedway. Kevin Anderson overcame a bad wreck during the USAC event to debut a new car last week and came away with an impressive win, his 4th of the season.

Setting Up This Week’s Races…

USRA Modifieds…

Tim Karrick ended up in victory lane last week. It marked yet another season that Karrick has driven to a win. Since Lakeside went back to dirt in 2000 there hasn’t been any other Modified driver to rack up the wins like Karrick. Not only does he have a lot of wins, he also has multiple track championships at Lakeside. Last week’s win just might ignite a fire in Karrick’s program.

The early leader in the last week’s feature, Darron Fuqua, came up with a bit of mechanical failure as his hot rod fell off while looking for his 2nd win on the season.

Kerry Davis still stands on top of the point standings in the first half of the season. Davis started 8th last week but finished runner-up to Karrick.

After 9 features this season only Davis has been able to win multiple races. As Karrick won last week it marked the 8th different winner. It just goes to show you just how tough the competition is at Lakeside Speedway.

A total of 39 different USRA Modified drivers have checked in this season to do battle at Lakeside. That doesn’t include the competitors from the USMTS event.

Lewis Jackson #3J Wellsville, KS.Lewis Jackson. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

Lewis Jackson is putting in a solid resume for the most improved driver award in 2015. This season Jackson is celebrating some solid finishes on the year. His improved finishing positions have pushed him up the point standings to 6th currently. No, he doesn’t have a win to his credit, but lets give him some credit. The competition level in the Modified class is tough. Each race it seems like Jackson is in the hunt. It shouldn’t be to long before he knocks down the door for a win. Keep an eye on Jackson this weekend as he should be somewhere up in the front half of the field.

USRA Stock Cars…

In the Stock Car Feature it was a little bit of a question mark on whether Kevin Anderson could jump back into the form that he had before his wild ride during the USAC event. The question was answered right after his heat race! Yes he could. Anderson won his heat and then followed it up with an impressive feature win. It was win #4 on the year for Anderson.

A relative new comer, Brent Alverson, battled up at the top spot for a few laps before his handling went away. It was nice seeing a new car in this division at Lakeside and it appears that he could be a front runner.

The points battle still sees Jim Powell Jr. at the top of the board for another week. Although Brett Heeter has been chipping into that lead week after week. Heeter had a 2nd place finish last week and the lead has now been knocked down to 17 points. Remember it’s never over till it’s over.

It was another strong week for Jason Ryun as he continued his fill in roll. Ryun pulled in another top 5 finishing in the 3rd spot.

Thirty six different drivers have logged points this season at Lakeside in the USRA Stock Car event.

USRA Stock Car Driver To Watch This Week…

Brent Alverson #22A Oskaloosa, KS.Brent Alverson. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

Alverson was a new face to Lakeside Speedway a week ago. He did an admirable job on his maiden voyage. He hung up front for awhile, but as most drivers find out that Lakeside is not an easy track to tame. Alverson has spent many years driving everything from a Hobby Stock to a Modified, but his home has always been in the Stock Car ranks. Racing on a tight budget, Alverson will get the most out of what he has. Keep a watchful eye on him this week as he will try to put his car up near the front again. It should be harder to do for the simple fact that every week this class gets tougher and tougher.

USRA B-Mods…

We talk about competition at Lakeside in just about every class, but this is one of those classes where it’s just about as tough as you are going to find it anywhere. Last week a field of 30 cars checked in looking to gain a victory. When it was all said and done it was another new face picking up the win, Andy Bryant. Bryant is a front runner where ever he races at and he tamed Lakeside pretty quickly. Brad Smith made some runs at Bryant on the restarts, but Bryant was just to strong on this night.

Ed Noll broke the tie with Shad Turner for the top spot in the points. Turner had an off night and dipped to 4th. The runner-up finish for Smith put him 1 point out of the top spot, not bad considering he missed one race this year.

There have been 5 different winners so far this season in the USRA B Mod division.

The B Mod class has been the most popular in 2015. To date a whopping total of 54 drivers have hit the track this season. Not a bad number and it’s sure to rise in the 2nd half of the year.

Gene Claxton #42 Kansas City, MOGene Claxton. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

When you have been around as long as Gene Claxton has, you don’t feel a lot of pressure. Claxton has won races, championships and more during his career. He is one of a few people that already resides in the Central Auto Racing Boosters Hall of Fame and he is still racing!! The winner’s circle has eluded him this season. Again the pressure won’t get to Claxton as he is one of the most laid back racers you will ever find. The flip side to that is that Claxton expects way more from himself than most other drivers. It’s the driving force in my mind that says he will get back to the front. Watch and see if this weekend isn’t his shot.

Grand Nationals…

The same record played for yet another week in the Grand National feature, it was that song by Tim Shields called ‘Keep on Keepin On!’ That’s right Tim Shields drove to win #7 on the season. With the exception of a couple of nights most of his wins have come handily.

Last week Nick Newton followed Shields to the front. Newton started 7th and finished 2nd. Not a bad run.

Grand National Driver To Watch This Week…

Tim Shields #42T, Kansas City, MOTim Shields. Reed Bros. Racing Photos

Tim Shields is celebrating what could be one of the greatest individual seasons ever racing at Lakeside Speedway. Hell, for that matter best season of anyone anywhere. I have never witnessed a driver that won every single race on a particular season. There is still a lot of racing to go, but so far Shields has made it look easy. Another credit to Shields is that he has yet to have a mechanical failure on the year. That says a lot to his prep time before he even gets to the track. As he looks for number 8 this Friday night, keep an eye on him. I have a feeling he just might do it.
