KANSAS CITY, Kan.—Sammy Swindell, a three-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion and member of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, will return to competition with the series this week and will be in action on Saturday, June 6, as O’Reilly Auto Parts Presents the Outlaws at Lakeside at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, as he fills in for the injured Jason Johnson in the No. 41 machine.

Johnson, a contender for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award, suffered fractured vertebrae in a racing accident in California in April. Australian Jamie Veal had previously been behind the wheel of Johnson’s machine.

Swindell has four World of Outlaws wins his career at Lakeside Speedway. The first of those came at the four-tenths-mile in 1983. He won on the pavement at Lakeside in both 1991 and 1992. Swindell’s most recent win at Lakeside came in 2012. He led 13 laps at the track last year and finished third.

“I’ve always ran pretty well at both tracks,” said Swindell in a team press release about running at Lakeside Speedway this weekend. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to return to both places next weekend. Hopefully we will gel quickly and be a contender from the start.”

The native of Germantown, Tenn., won his first World of Outlaws title in 1981 and repeated the following season. Swindell claimed his third Outlaws championship in 1997. He has 294 career A-Feature wins with the World of Outlaws, which is second only to 20-time series champion Steve Kinser, who stepped away from full-time competition following the 2014 season.

Swindell also stepped away from full-time racing in August of last year, and has been competing sporadically this year. He has raced in three World of Outlaws events in 2015, with a best finish of fifth at I-55 Raceway in Missouri last month. Swindell raced earlier this season in Indiana with the series at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, where he finished 13th.

Tentatively, Swindell is scheduled to be in the No. 41 car for the next two weeks and then the team will re-evaluate where they are.
