May 14, 2015

It was another chance for Mother Nature to dampen the spirits of the racers at Lakeside Speedway, but for yet another week the fine folks at Lakeside Speedway were able to get he race in one more time. It seems like for several weeks the rain flirts with Lakeside but it never hits it hard enough to cancel the show. Whatever the folks at Lakeside Speedway are doing, knock on wood and keep ole Mother Nature on the losing side. Several race tracks are struggling to get races in and Lakeside is just the opposite.

Friday night, May 15th, at 7:30 p.m. the green flag will fly and the weekly racing at the Home of Dirt Track Racing in Kansas City; Lakeside Speedway.

The USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B Mods and Grand Nationals will once again slug it out looking to gain the upper hand in the run to a championship!

Last Week’s Recap…

Last week was another night of racing on a heavy, fast race track. In the USRA Modified Feature Kerry Davis took home his 2nd win of the season. Jason Ryun, subbing for Anthony Whitham, rolled to his 1st USRA Stock Car win in just 2 starts! Brad Smith’s freight train was derailed by Randal Schiffelbein Jr. as he won his 1st USRA B Mod Feature of the season and Tim Shields flexed his muscle for win #5 in the Grand Nationals. Last week’s races set up another good showdown for this Friday night.

Setting Up This Week’s Races…

USRA Modifieds…

Kerry Davis’ win in the Modified division last week kept him at the top of the point standings, but don’t count his chickens before there hatched. Darron Fuqua has won several track championships, but none at Lakeside Speedway. Tim Karrick holds multiple titles in the Modified division at Lakeside to go with a ton of wins. Nic Bidinger is coming off of two straight championships and is closing quickly too. These 4 have separated from the pack and could have a great battle to the finish. Keep an eye on this race.

Where is Tim Setzer? After picking up the win 3 weeks ago, he has yet to return to Lakeside Speedway to race. Is that good news for the competition or will Setzer be coming back to see what else he can do for 2015.

Hats off to Josh Everhart last week in the Modifieds. Everhart made his first trip to Lakeside Speedway. He picked up a heat race win and after having to go to the back of the A came back up for a 4th place finish. Not to shabby.

Since blowing a motor on the opening night this year, Aaron Marrant has struggled to get his program on track. Fans know that this will not last long. One would have to think that Marrant will get the ship going in the right direction. I am sure the competition will hope that he doesn’t.

Last week the Modifieds saw just 14 cars check into compete, will the field jump back up again this week?

USRA Modified Driver To Watch This Week…

Kerry Davis #68, Parkville, MO.

Davis is seeing a resurgence in his race program at Lakeside Speedway for 2015. It all got started on week number 1 with a win, several top 5 finishes and another win last week have kept him at the top of the point standings. What is it that has Davis rolling this year? He, his dad and the rest of the crew have been together for years and that could be it. Maybe it could be that Davis has finally caught up to the rest of the field with technology and setups. Maybe it could be that Davis is firing on all cylinders and has it going right on all fronts! Davis is one of the drivers at Lakeside that has won just about everything there is to win at Lakeside, but he is still looking for a Modified Track Championship. Keep an eye on him this week and see if he can continue his good season.

USRA Stock Cars…

Jason Ryun is a driver we talked about a week ago. He is subbing for Anthony Whitham this year while he is out injured and it was just 2 weeks ago he made his 1st start during the Iron Man event. Whitham didn’t make a bad choice. Ryun has won Stock Car Features before at Lakeside and it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he is running up front. Then again maybe it is…. Will he keep the momentum up this week?

Jim Powell Jr. has gotten off to a good start this year. Right now he found the top of the point standing and he has done it without winning a feature. It means that week after week Powell is finishing somewhere near the top spot. Championships have been won before without winning a feature all season long. It’s an impressive feat, but it’s very tough to do.

Since having a tough start to the season, Nate Barnes is still continuing to get better week after week in his new XFactor Chassis. Last week Barnes turned in a runner-up finish and it pushed him up to 3rd in the points. Where will he land this week.

The Stock Car class was down a little last week, look for those numbers to climb back up this week.

USRA Stock Car Driver To Watch This Week…

Brett Heeter #05, Kansas City, KS.

This week I think the fans should keep an eye on Brett Heeter this week. Heeter is seeking to win his 3rd Stock Car Championship and for the first time this season finds himself out of the top spot in the points. Rocky would say it doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down but rather what you do when you get knocked down! Will Heeter come back this week and make a statement? Can he get into victory lane? In just about 24 hours we will know the answer. I know that it’s early in the season, but everyone knows it’s easier to be out in front than it is to come from behind.

USRA B Mods…

Last week we were talking about how hot Brad Smith was on the 2015 season and by any means don’t think he has cooled off. Yes, he didn’t win the feature but he did score a 2nd place finish. It also closed him into the 2nd place in the point standings even though he skipped opening night. It’s safe to say he cooled off a couple degrees, but Smith is still red hot!

Just like Powell in the Stock Cars, Eddie Schwope has taken the top spot in the points in the early going. He has yet to get a win, but consistent finishes has has put him at the top. It’s a dog-eat-dog world in this division and the top 4 are separated by a mere 13 points. Last week’s leader, Shadren Turner, fell from 1st to 4th in one week. The competition level is super high in the USRA B Mods.

Even though a feature is suppose to start 24 cars last week 27 cars made up the A Main lineup. Several times this year there has been 26 to 27 cars and instead of having a B Feature to eliminate 3 cars, Lakeside Speedway has let everyone into the A Main. I applaud this move as it’s great PR for the track and how they respect their competitors.

Did Schiffelbein Jr. break the damn last week? With his win will he open it up for others to jump into victory lane. Gene Claxton, Tim Powell, Chad Clancy, Luke Neiman and a host of others are able to get into victory lane. The big question is are they ready to jump up and take the spot.

USRA B Mod Driver To Watch This Week…

Randal Schiffelbein Jr., Tecumseh, KS.

It just seemed like a few years ago this driver was beginning his racing career in the Pure Stocks at HPT. He went on to several wins and a championship in his rookie season. Pure Stock racing lasted for 1 year as he would pick up a B Mod and jump right in. Schiffelbein has traveled around the Midwest racing against the best and it’s helped him with his program. It also doesn’t hurt that he is another one of the Prime Racing Customers that seem to supply a lot of B Mod knowledge. Last week Schiffelbein showed off his skills as he held off Brad Smith and got win #1 of the season. Watch his encore performance this week.

Grand Nationals…

Tim Shields is doing everything he can to repeat as track champion in the Grand National Division. He has 5 wins, in just 5 races, this season and he already has a 70 point lead in the point standings. Right now the wheels would have to come off for Shields to struggle. I thought that his B Mod might take his concentration away from the Grand National, but it hasn’t done that at all. He is focused on the title!

Marshall Jewett has recycled an older Grand National of Kelby Ostrander and former champion, Nic Bidinger. He is still trying to get a handle on it, but the fans have been having a hard time figuring out it’s Jewett in the car! Year after Year, Jewett has been on the track in an old wagon, a 57 Chevy and on old Corvette! Fans want to see the old Jewett flare on the speedway. Just maybe….

The Grand Nationals are still looking for an infusion of competitors. There are still cars and drivers out there, will they be coming back to give this class a shot in the arm? Time will tell.

Grand National Driver To Watch This Week…

Don Marrs #9, Shawnee, KS.

Each week we wonder who will it be to get Tim Shields out of victory lane. Well last week it was Don Marrs chance to get it done. Marrs held on to the top spot for about 1/2 of the feature, unfortunately for Marrs a yellow and a restart bunched the field up and once back to green Shields got around Marrs and went on to the win. Marrs has a lot of eyes on him because he is the owner of Lakeside Speedway, but when it comes down to it Marrs is a racer at heart. His wife and step-son have taken the reigns of the track and it leaves Marrs to do what he loves race. Marrs gets a ton of laps as he races a B Mod and Grand National each week. See if that helps him get back to the front again in the GN this week.
