May 7, 2015

The USMTS Modifieds have moved on down the road for now. You can also throw the Holley Iron Man Stock Cars and B-Mods in with them. Last Friday night was a great show, but now it’s time for the racers of Lakeside Speedway to get back down to business!

Friday night, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. the green flag will fly and the weekly racers of Lakeside Speedway will continue their hunt for a championship.

Back in action Friday night will be the USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods and the Grand Nationals. It’s shaping up to be another great night of racing on the River’s Edge!

Last Week’s Recap…

In the USMTS Modified Feature it was a repeat of the last one as Terry Phillips out dueled Rodney Sanders to take home the win. Darron Fuqua was the highest finishing track regular coming home in 8th. Steven Jackson drove from Iowa to Kansas to storm the field in the Iron Man Stock Car Feature event. Jackson got around Jason Ryun on a restart at lap 9 and then drove off to the win. Brad Smith took home his 2nd straight Iron Man win at Lakeside Speedway last Friday night. Not only was it Smith’s 2nd Iron Man win, it was also his 3rd straight feature win at Lakeside in 2015.

Setting Up This Week’s Races…

USRA Modifieds…

Don’t look now there has been another change at the top of the point standings in the early part of the season. This time it’s Tim Karrick at the front of the field. Karrick, a multiple time champ, has been getting stronger each week and looks to be regaining his old form.

8 is the number! That’s the number of regular weekly racers that made the A Main last week with the USMTS. Darron Fuqua (8th), Tim Karrick (13th), Mark Schafman (14th), Nic Bidinger (15th), Lance Town (18th), Tyler Schmidt (19th), Aaron Marrant (22nd) and Kerry Davis (24th).

Fuqua had a top 5 run going until a late race accident slowed him down.

The last regular weekly Modified Feature saw Tim Setzer get the win. Setzer wasn’t able to make the USMTS show do to family obligations and he is looking forward to getting back behind the wheel soon.

Mark Schafman. Reed Bros. Racing PhotosIn his quest for a 3rd straight track championship, Nic Bidinger, is finding things a little tough this season. Gremlins have plagued him and currently he sits in 5th place in the points (35 off the leader).

USRA Modified Driver To Watch This Week…

Mark Schafman #34, Edwardsville, KS.

Schafman has had some good runs over the years at Lakeside Speedway. There has been some victories sprinkled in with a lot of top 10 & top 5’s. Schafman moved up from the Grand Nationals a few years back and his skills get better each and every year. This season Schafman has had some good runs. Last week Schafman had a good nigh with the USMTS last week. A smaller budget that most teams, Schafman and his dad work hard to find speed where others don’t and it shows. Watch this week and see if Schafman is in the top 5 this Friday night.

USRA Stock Cars…

Hands down, this class, has put on some of the best racing this season. Each and every week they continue to amaze the fans of Lakeside Speedway. A total of 4 different drivers have picked up wins in just 6 races. Kevin Anderson was the only driver in the division to take home multiple wins so far this season. Unfortunately, a bad wreck during the USAC Feature, has slowed down Anderson’s hot season, but trust me that someone is ready to take his place.

Brett Heeter, who is looking for championship #3, is still sitting on top of the standings. Heeter currently leads Jim Powell Jr. by 9 points after 6 races. Heeter is coming off a strong run last Friday night where he finished runner-up in the Iron Man Feature.

Jason Ryun, a former Stock Car driver, took the wheel of Anthony Whitham’s hot rod and looked like he was going to get the win. Ryun would finish 7th after leading the first 9 laps. Too bad for Lakeside fans he is not racing on a full time basis in 2015.

Christopher Smith. Reed Bros. Racing PhotosJohn O’Neal Jr. had a good run last Friday night going from 12th to 5th in the main event. Another local driver that did well was Justin Seifert, who went from 16th to 9th.

USRA Stock Car Driver To Watch This Week…

Christopher Smith #1, Kansas City, MO.

This week I am going with a long shot in the Stock Car division. Christopher Smith is an unknown so far this year. Smith is a great competitor and is well respected by his fellow racers. His car looks good and he has kept his nose clean in the first 6 races. As he continues to work on his program, watch to see if he can break into the top 10. Going into this Friday night, I have got a feeling that Smith is due for an enormous run.

USRA B Mods…

Brad Smith has caught fire in the B Mod division. Three straight wins and it looks like Smith isn’t going to slow down. After Ed Noll’s 2 straight to start the season, it’s been all Smith since week 3.

Chad Clancy, last season’s track and national champion, is off to a rough start in 2015. Currently, Clancy is sitting 9th in the points standings (he missed one week due to a work obligation). Last year was a dream season for Clancy. Don’t think Clancy won’t make another run this season, he is figuring out his new chassis and week after week he is improving. A 3rd place finish last week with the Iron Man series should be proof.

Shadren Turner has quitely jumped to the top of the points standings in the early part of the season. Turner has turned in the most consistent finishes week in and week out and this has placed him in the top spot.

Thirty five B Mods checked in last week to do battle. This has been the most popular class in 2015. For the weekly racing series a total of 41 different drivers have logged points this season.

USRA B Mod Driver To Watch This Week…

Colten Stevens #222, Basehor, KS.

Colten is an up and comer at Lakeside Speedway. It seems like just a few years ago Stevens was beginning his racing career in the B Mods. Now a few years later, Stevens is getting better each week. Stevens has become a customer of Prime Racing and has been picking the brain of former Modified hot shoe Dustin Boney. A little help never hurts anyone. Stevens has taken to the advice and it can be seen on the race track. If he can stay away from trouble out on the speedway it’s possible that he might have the chance to pull into victory lane. Keep an eye on Stevens this Friday night.

Grand Nationals…

Is there anyone having a better season at Lakeside than Tim Shields? Shields is undefeated on the season. Four up and 4 down. At this rate Shields could be staring at another championship.

As Shields continues to dominate, the question now becomes who is going to be the first driver to win a feature besides Shields? The list of drivers that are capable of doing it is long. Anyone can do it, it’s just going to take a great performance and a little luck.

Houston Johnson. Reed Bros. Racing PhotosGrand National Driver To Watch This Week…

Houston Johnson #7, 97, Kansas City, MO.

If there has been one driver that has had the chance to knock Shields off it was Houston Johnson. Johnson is a young driver that has shown he has what it takes. It was just a few weeks back that he raced Shields as hard as anyone has all season long. More time behind the wheel is going pay big dividends for this young man. It also helps that his brother, Austin, is also a racer and good old fashioned sibling rivalry could help make Houston better. This week look for Johnson to put the pressure on Shields this week and possibly pull off a win.
