Another Friday night of racing heads into Kansas City’s home for dirt track racing at Lakeside Speedway on April 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Last week’s winners will have about 24 more hours to celebrate their wins, the rest of the competition will figure out what went wrong and try to make it right and the fans will see some best dirt track racing our nation has to offer.

This Friday night April 17, 2015, the spectator gates will open up for race #3 on the season. The USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B Mods & Grand Nationals will be on display, front and center once again.

Last Week’s Recap…
A week ago the drivers were thrown a bit of a curve ball. Mother Nature had dropped some rain down on the Kansas City area and track officials were trying to determine just what course of action they would have to take to get the racing surface ready to race.

A dry slick track is what the drivers got. When this happens fans get to see just what drivers can drive during this type of condition and what teams can set their cars up to operate the best for their drivers.

Two racers were able to repeat their wins from opening night. Ed Noll showed that he wasn’t a one trick pony as he took the top honors for the 2nd straight week in the USRA B Mod Feature. In the Grand National ranks, Tim Shields, flexed his muscle by working a late race pass to get his 2nd straight win in the Grand National division. Nic Bidinger bounced back after having mechanical issues on opening night in route to picking up the win in the USRA Modified Feature. The USRA Stock Cars continue to put on exciting races and last week’s feature was just that, exciting, as Kevin Anderson outlasted the competition to win.

USRA Modified Preview…
Nic Bidinger showed some toughness last week in route to getting the win in the Modified division.

Opening night didn’t go the way the 2x defending track champ wanted. Bidinger didn’t let it get him down. Last week he brought his hot rod back to Lakeside Speedway and showed the fans that he can still put it up front. Bidinger has surely planted himself as one of the best Modified drivers Lakeside Speedway has seen over the years.

It will be interesting to watch Bidinger to see if he can pull off the 3 peat.

Oh so close can be the motto of driver, Darron Fuqua. Fuqua for the 2nd straight week came home in the runner up spot. Fuqua led some laps last week but Bidinger was too strong and would get the win. Fuqua’s consolation prize was good enough for him to secure the top spot in the points 2 races into the season. It should only be a matter of time before he celebrates in victory lane.

Jim Moody made his first trip to Lakeside last week and made an impressive run. Moody started in the 11th position and drove up to a 5th place finish. Not to bad. Unfortunately for Moody Saturday night he would roll his Mod at CMS. Hopefully for the fans of Lakeside Speedway we will get to see him return.

The Modified division should see the addition of some new drivers this week. Some drivers have taken their time getting going for 2015 and a few drivers had some bad luck on opening night and practice days and they are now read to go.

USRA Modified Driver To Watch This Week…
Darron Fuqua #87 Mayetta, KS.
One would think that running 2nd for 2 weeks straight isn’t bad. Not if you are Darron Fuqua. Fuqua is a competitive driver and he wants to win every single race he lines up for. It doesn’t matter if it’s a heat or a feature. Don’t think for one second that Fuqua hasn’t been thinking about why he hasn’t been in victory lane yet. This week he should be a driver to keep an eye on. Victory lane has eluded him 2 times but the 3rd time might be a charm for this ace. Last year he finished in the top 5 nationally in USRA points and you put that together with several track championships at multiple tracks it should tell you that this racer is talented. Keep an eye on Fuqua this week.

USRA Stock Car Preview…
If you can’t get fired up about the close racing, wheel-to-wheel, door-to-door racing action that this class provides on a weekly basis you are not a race fan! Each week this division puts on one helluva show! There shouldn’t be any reason why fans would not expect that type of racing each and every week.

Kevin Anderson didn’t make it on opening night this year. Maybe that was good for the competition.

Last week Anderson had to stay patient as he hawked the leader, Jake Newman, for most of the race. As only a couple laps remained he was able to get inside of the leader going down the back shoot and took the lead and would hold Newman off on the last lap for the win.

Nick Whalen showed the fans some action last week during the feature. Whalen, who currently sits 2nd in the points, drove from 20th to finish 5th in the main event. He would be the Hard Charger on the night.

Another strong run went to Jim Powell Jr. Powell finished 4th after starting 12th. As some of these drivers start to figure out the track and their cars look for some new winners in victory lane.

Opening night winner, Brett Heeter, was in the mix last week at the end of the feature as he finished 3rd. The 3rd place finish kept Heeter at the top spot in the point standings here in the early going.

USRA Stock Car Driver To Watch This Week…
John O’Neal Jr #15 Kearney, MO.
O’Neal has spent the off season building new Stock Cars for several competitors. Don’t worry he saved one for himself and last week debuted at Lakeside. Unfortunately the debut wasn’t what he was hoping for as he finished 19th after starting 3rd and looked strong on the night. For that reason he is this week’s driver to keep an eye on. Look for O’Neal to come back this week with everything double checked and ready to go. A longtime Kansas City racer, O’Neal, knows how to get to victory lane and this could be his week.

USRA B Mod Preview…
Ed Noll has got it figured out!

For the 2nd straight week Noll took the win at Lakeside Speedway in the B Mod division. Not only is he winning, but he is doing it in impressive fashion. Noll isn’t putting on a late pass for the win, he is leading a majority of the laps in each race he is in.

Will this be the week that the competition catches up to Noll?

This class is loaded with talent. If Noll keeps going with this trend it will put him in legendary status.

Brad Smith celebrated a strong run last week. Smith finished in the 2nd spot after starting 10th on the grid in the main event. Last week’s addition of Smith in the lineup only strengthens the argument of just how tough the competition is at Lakeside.

The USRA B Mod class is the most popular class this season at Lakeside Speedway. A total of 32 different drivers have logged points this year. That is the most of any of the 4 classes that race on a weekly basis.

USRA B Mod Driver To Watch This Week…
Tim Powell #57 Lansing, KS.
Tim Powell is currently sitting in a tie for 4th in points after 2 races. Last week Powell finished with a top 10, but he did start 8th. Last season Powell returned to racing at Lakeside Speedway after a long hiatus. In his return he found victory lane, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Powell is running up front and winning races. It wasn’t that long ago that Powell was a regular in the Modified division at Lakeside and winning races. This experience has given him an advantage in the B Mod class. This week look for Powell to keep moving towards the front and possibly end up in victory lane once again.

Grand National Preview…
Steve Dibben was just a few laps short last week of upsetting the defending track champ, Tim Shields.

As it has been in the past. Shields put together a methodical run. Shields chased down Dibben and with 3 laps left was able to get by and hold on for his 2nd straight win. Shields doesn’t get rattled. He takes his time and knows when it’s time to go. That makes him a dangerous driver to the competition because that makes him tough.

Will the trend continue this week in Shields favor or will a new driver step into victory lane?

Hats off to Houston Johnson and his crew for making it back to the track last Friday night. Johnson suffered a hard hit on opening night, but his team worked hard during the week and got his ride back together in time to go out and finish 5th in the feature.

The big question surrounding this class is where are all the competitors? Hopefully, there are others that have just not gotten to the track yet and will be ready to go in the coming weeks. The more the merrier in the Grand National division.

Grand National Driver To Watch This Week…

Dave Powell #2 Kearney, MO
In the Grand National class there are favorites and then there are guys you just root for. This week’s driver to watch has the potential to be a favorite it’s just a matter of time, but this week he is a guy you should be rooting for. Powell is one of those drivers that comes out every week and has a good time. Doesn’t gripe, doesn’t complain and shows great sportsmanship. This week keep an eye on the #2 and see if he can put it to the front of the field.
