The weather got a little warmer and the second race night of the 2015 season at the Lakeside Speedway went off without a hitch.

One week ago the reigning Lakeside Speedway USRA Modified Track Champion, Nic Bidinger, had a tough outing. After running near the front of the pack a mechanical failure would end his night prematurely. Not the way Bidinger wanted to open up the 2015 campaign.

After that bad week the question was whether or not Bidinger would rebound? I would say the answer is yes.

Race number 2 of the season in the USRA Modifieds saw Darron Fuqua get out to the front in the early part of the feature. Fuqua was coming off a runner-up finish one week ago and earlier in the night he showed his strength by winning his heat race.

As the laps wore on Bidinger started to track down the leader. Just passed the halfway point Bidinger made his move on Fuqua taking the top spot. From there Bidinger was able to keep his hot rod out in front of Fuqua’s. Bidinger would take the checkered flag and pick up his 1st win of the 2015 season.

It was a strong showing after the troubles from a week ago.

Fuqua, for the 2nd straight week finished in the 2nd spot, 3rd was Mark Schafman, last week’s winner, Kerry Davis, finished in 4th and it was the newcomer, Jim Moody, getting the 5th position.

USRA Heat Race Winners on the night were Bidinger, Davis and Fuqua.

Excitement was the word of the night for the USRA Stock Car Feature event. Each week the drivers of this class put on a great race, but as they get better the fans are starting to take notice.

Jake Newman looked to be the man of the night when the feature got under way.

Newman jumped out to the lead and appeared to be on his way to the feature win. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell Kevin Anderson.

Anderson was making his 1st start of the season in the Stock Cars. The night got started off well for Anderson as he logged a win in his heat race. The momentum kept going in the feature as he worked his way up to Newman as the laps began to wind down.

Newman did everything he could do, just shy of taking home the win. On lap 13 Anderson applied the pressure and it was enough to get by for the lead. As there were only a couple laps left Newman would fight back but Anderson wasn’t to be denied on this night. Anderson would drive to the checkers and gain his 1st win of the season.

Newman would settle for the runner-up spot, last week’s winner, Brett Heeter, finished in 3rd, 4th was Scotty Moore and 5th went to Jim Powell Jr.

Nick Whalen provided some extra excitement for the fans as he was the ‘hard charger’ in this event going from 20th to 6th in the feature.

USRA Stock Car Heat Race Winners were Anderson, John O’Neal Jr. and Dean Hensler.

Two classes at Lakeside Speedway saw new winners and there were 2 classes that saw repeat winners.

Ed Noll took down the win a week ago in the USRA B-Mod class. Noll’s run a week ago was an impressive one at that. Noll had been close several times before, but just hadn’t knocked down the door to victory lane until last week. All eyes were on Noll again this week to see if he was for real.

After leading every lap of this week’s feature and taking the win, most fans would have to say that Ed Noll is for real. If his winning streak continues he might even be in the hunt for a championship, but remember it’s still early in the season.

The B-Mod class is full of tough competitors. Once they got the feature rolling it was a solid race from top to bottom. Racing behind Noll there were several divers battling it out.

Brad Smith, making his 1st appearance, finished in the runner-up position after starting 10th on the grid, 3rd went to Shadren Turner, racing to a 4th place finish was Dakota Foster and rounding out the top 5 was Eddie Schwope.

USRA Heat Race Winners were Sam Schuler, Chad Clancy and Nick Newton.

For the 2nd straight race in the Grand National division Tim Shields was the winner.

Each week Shields has had to earn the win. Last week he had to work his way through the field and this week he had to get by the early race leader, Steve Dibben.

Dibben led for 10 laps but it wasn’t going to be enough. Shields has his car setup just right and his confidence is soaring at this point. All of these factors are why Shields is as tough of a competitor as he is.

Shields would take away the lead on lap 11 and then motor on to win number 2 of the season.

Dibben finished 2nd, 3rd was Donnie Brown, Don Marrs came home in 4th and racing his way to a top 5 was Houston Johnson.

Racing action continues at Lakeside Speedway next Friday night, April 17. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 6:45 p.m. and the first race goes green at 7:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $12, kids 7 to 12 are $6, children 6 and under are Free and military personnel, seniors and students all get in for $10 with proper ID.
