Kansas City, KS – Friday, July 11, 2014 – Kerry Davis ended a two year, Lakeside Speedway, dry spell last week by winning the USRA A-Modified feature. This week he made sure the dry spell wouldn’t be so long as he raced to another feature win. While he may have won the race it was no gimme. Davis looked strong early and led the first 11 laps. Trevor Hunt worked his way through the field and took the lead on lap 12 with Davis giving chase. Davis regained the lead on lap 17. Hunt led laps 18 and 19 and then saw his car fade away giving up the lead to Davis yet again. Current point leader, Nic Bidinger, needed every lap to work through the field, running down all but Davis at the end. It was only on the last lap that Bidinger was able to get passed Tyler Schmidt for second. Hunt fell back to fourth. Mark Schafman rounded out the top-five.
Tim Powell continued his win-every-other-week streak in the USRA B-Modified division by leading at the end of the 15-lap event. Had it not been for consistent running he may not have won this one. Yancy Shepard was evenly matched lap after lap with Powell and was able to take the lead on lap 8 and 9 but Powell found the power to motivate back to the lead on lap 10 and would not be successfully challenged from that point on. Shepard finished second to a hard charging Jake Richards. Richards spent the last half of the race battling Chad Clancy for position with the two swapping spots repeatedly. Shadren Turner worked his way from 9th to round out the top five.
The USRA Stock Car division feature race featured another first-time winner as Gene Stigall stomped to victory lane after the 15-lap event. Of the 11 different feature winners in the Stock Car division this season, Stigall is now the sixth driver to win a first victory at Lakeside. Stigall has won races before but none had come at Lakeside Speedway. Stigall started 5th and worked his way up to second when lady-luck shined in his direction. A lap-10 caution derailed early race leader, Brett Heeter, giving the lead to Stigall. Stigall, at that point, raced to keep Marshall Jewett and Sean Foster behind him. Jewett started 9th and finished second ahead of Foster who started 7th. Jeff Elder raced hard from 13th to finish fourth, edging out Phil Snodgrass at the line.
The Grand National A-main event saw Don Marrs pick up his first trophy of the season. Marrs led wire to wire holding off Nick Drew early on, then last week’s winner, Austin Johnson, and finally defending champion Gary Donaldson. Donaldson was a hard-charger racing from 8th to finish second. Had he not spent so much time battling Johnson to the end he would have been challenging for the lead late in the race. Current point leader, Tim Shields, was another hard-charger, running from 11th to finish 4th. Chris Littrell rounded out the top-five.
